Deadly Nato tanker explosion in Pakistan
| Quote: | A Nato oil tanker has exploded in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 15 people, say officials.
Police said the tanker, transporting fuel to Nato forces in Afghanistan, was hit by a bomb overnight near the town of Landi Kotal in the Khyber region.
People gathered to collect spilt fuel when another fire broke out, said one senior police official.
At least 14 other Nato tankers were damaged in a separate attack nearby, at the Torkham border crossing.
The region is a crucial transport route for supplies destined for Nato forces in Afghanistan but the convoys frequently come under attack from militants and criminals.
Local official Shafeerullah Wazir said the tanker was hit by a small bomb in the early hours of the morning.
"The oil tanker caught fire after a blast caused by a small bomb before dawn," the AFP news agency quoted him as saying.
"Villagers from nearby houses rushed and started collecting oil coming out of the destroyed tanker after the fire had been extinguished.
"Suddenly the fire erupted again and at least 15 people including five young boys who had been collecting oil in their buckets were burnt to death." |

8 US-led soldiers killed in Afghan war
| Quote: |
Eight soldiers with the US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) have been killed in the latest spate of violence against foreign troops in southern Afghanistan.
"Seven ISAF service members died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan today," a Press TV correspondent reported, citing a brief statement released by the military contingent on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a US official stated that all seven of the NATO service members killed in the incident in southern Afghanistan were Americans.
In a separate incident, a US-led soldier died on Thursday in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan's southeastern province of Paktika, some 155 kilometers (96 miles) southeast of the Afghan capital city of Kabul.
Taliban militants said they shot down the helicopter operated by the US military forces in Paktika province.
Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) are by far the most lethal weapon Taliban militants have used against foreign troops, Afghan forces as well as civilians.
More than 190 foreign troops have been killed in war-ravaged Afghanistan so far this year.
Last year, nonetheless, remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties with 711 reported fatalities. The number eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.
Hundreds of civilians have also been killed in US-led airstrikes and ground operations in various parts of Afghanistan over the past few months, with Afghans growing increasingly outraged over the seemingly endless number of deadly assaults.
Moreover, the growing death toll of Afghan civilians as a result of NATO and US military operations in the country has fueled tensions between Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Western allies.

Afghan soldier kills US-led soldier
| Quote: |
NATO says an Afghan man wearing an army uniform has shot and killed a US-led foreign soldier and injured a number of others in the country's troubled south.
The US-led military alliance has not disclosed the nationality of the dead soldier.
Local officials confirmed that the man was an Afghan soldier.
Earlier on the day, four US-led troops were killed in a roadside bomb attack in the eastern Wardak Province.
Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for the attack.
Official figures show at least 2,491 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US invasion of the country in 2001.
Violence in Afghanistan is on the rise as militants ramped up their long-expected spring offensive.
The security situation has steadily worsened across Afghanistan over the past few years despite the presence of around 150,000 US led foreign troops in the country.

Four Nato troops killed by bomb in eastern Afghanistan
| Quote: | Four foreign troops have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) has said.
A statement did not give their nationalities. Most of the troops serving in the country's east, near the border with Pakistan, are Americans.
At least 220 foreign troops have died in Afghanistan so far this year, according to the iCasualties website.
Earlier, Isaf said two Nato troops had been killed in the south on Friday.
It gave no further details about the deaths which came after separate insurgent attacks, but the UK said one of its soldiers had been killed while on patrol with the Afghan National Police in Lashkar Gah district of Helmand Province.
Fighting has intensified since the Taliban launched their spring offensive.
Saturday was the deadliest day for Nato-led troops since 26 May, when a total of nine US troops were killed in three incidents.
Eight were killed in separate roadside bombings in Kandahar province, and one died of injuries from a helicopter crash in Paktika. |

US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan
| Quote: | A militant attack has killed a service member of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in southern Afghanistan.
The foreign soldier lost his life on Sunday morning, the Associated Press reported.
The military alliance did not reveal the nationality of the soldier or the exact location of the incident.
The death brings to 228 the number of US-led troops killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to the iCasualties website.
The death toll of the US-led forces in 2010 stood at 711, making the year the deadliest for foreign forces in Afghanistan since the start of the war.
According to official figures, more than 2,503 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the invasion of the country in 2001.
NATO has admitted that the power of militants in Afghanistan is on the rise despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led forces in the war-hit country.
The rising number of foreign casualties has stoked opposition to the Afghan war in NATO member states as well as in other countries that have contributed troops to the mission.

15 NATO tankers torched in Afghanistan
| Quote: |
At least 15 NATO fuel tankers have been torched in the latest wave of attacks by militants in conflict-riddled Afghanistan.
Militants in Afghanistan targeted convoys carrying supplies to NATO troops, killing nine Afghan security guards and torching 15 fuel tankers on Saturday.
Two of the attacks targeted private guards escorting supply trucks to a base for Polish troops in the eastern Ghazni province. A third attack happened along the border between Herat and Farah provinces in the west.
Afghan militants say their assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US strikes on Afghanistan's tribal regions.
Fuel and other vital supplies for the US military and NATO forces in Afghanistan are mostly transported from Pakistan through a route in tribal regions on Pakistani-Afghan border.
Supplies arrive by sea in the Pakistani city of Karachi, where security analysts believe most of the Afghan Taliban leadership is now hiding. From there, they must travel in long, exposed convoys, through Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northwest Pakistan.
Other routes, largely through Russia and the Central Asian states, have proved too costly, both politically and economically.
Militants have staged violent attacks in tribal regions in recent months, torching hundreds of NATO vehicles and containers destined for foreign troops in Afghanistan.
Despite the presence of nearly 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, security and calm have never been restored in the Asian country since the 2001 US-led invasion as terror and militancy have become more rampant. |

| Quote: | Nine US-led soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan as foreign troops continue to experience some of their deadliest days in the war-ravaged country.
NATO said on Sunday that four of the soldiers died of injuries sustained in non-battle related incidents. Four others were killed in fighting in southern Afghanistan.
On soldier, identified as a Frenchman, was killed by small arms fire in Afghanistan's central Kapisa Province. All the deaths occurred on Saturday.
The US-led military alliance did not reveal the nationalities of the soldiers.
At least 2,531international troops -- most of them American, have been killed in Afghanistan since the invasion of the country in 2001.
The developments come as the security situation continues to deteriorate in Afghanistan with US-led troops and government forces killed by Taliban militants on a near-daily basis.
Tens of thousands of civilians have also lost their lives since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
The security situation has been steadily worsening across Afghanistan over the past few years despite the presence of around 150,000 US-led foreign troops in the country.

NATO tankers destroyed in Afghanistan
| Quote: |
One tank and two fuel tankers belonging to the US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan have been destroyed in a roadside bomb explosion in Wardak province.
Afghan officials said NATO helicopters arrived at the site of the incident and probably took the bodies of the victims as well as the injured, a Press TV correspondent reported on Saturday.
No report of casualties has so far been given.
In another incident late Friday, Taliban militants attacked a convoy of foreign forces on the road from the Afghan capital of Kabul to Nangarhar and destroyed two fuel tankers.
An Afghan commander was killed in the assault.
Afghan militants say their assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US drone strikes on Afghanistan's tribal regions.

Two NATO tankers torched in Pakistan
| Quote: | Militants have attacked and torched two NATO oil tankers in separate incidents in Baluchistan province in southwestern Pakistan.
Unknown gunmen charged and set fire to one tanker carrying supplies from the Pakistani city of Karachi for the US-led forces in neighboring Afghanistan, a Press TV correspondent reported.
One of the people in the vehicle was wounded in the attack.
Meanwhile, unidentified attackers, who were riding bikes, intercepted and set ablaze another tanker in Baluchistan.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
The Taliban militants have in recent months destroyed scores of containers with supplies bound for US-led forces in Afghanistan.
Despite the frequent attacks on the NATO supply convoys, the US military has not stopped its unauthorized drone attacks on Pakistan's territory.

These guys may as well have been riding camels - or pogo sticks.
When the logistical supply lines of the most powerful, expensive, technologically sophisticated military in the world can be disrupted by a few punks on bicycles..................you just gotta know that this operation isn't going to end well. _________________

The Italian defense ministry has confirmed the death and injury in a statement issued from Rome on Saturday.
Italy has contributed 3,800 troops to the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan and the bulk of its troops are stationed in the western Herat Province.
Meanwhile, a homemade bomb killed another trooper in southern Afghanistan on Friday. NATO has not disclosed the nationality of the soldier and the exact location of the incident.
The developments come at a time when the US-led war in Afghanistan seems to be at a crucial stage with militants believed to be gaining ground.
At least 283 US-led foreign forces have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

UK soldier missing in Afghanistan
| Quote: | A British soldier has gone missing in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
A massive search involving aircraft and ground troops has been launched after he went missing from his base in central Helmand.
He had left the base alone in the early hours of Monday morning, a move which is described as "highly unusual".
The soldier's next of kin have been informed. The Taliban has told the BBC it has killed a soldier in the area.
The BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul said a local Taliban fighter told the BBC that insurgents had captured a foreign soldier in the vicinity and after a firefight the solider was killed.
But our correspondent said the Taliban often made exaggerated claims.
The international mission in Afghanistan, Isaf, said it was unable to confirm that any gun battle took place.
It said it was attempting to find the missing soldier as quickly as possible.
The MoD said in a statement: "A British serviceman is missing in Afghanistan. An extensive operation to locate him is under way."
A US soldier is believed to be in Taliban captivity in Pakistan.
Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, 25, from Hailey, Idaho, was captured in June 2009 in Paktika province in eastern Afghanistan. |
