US-led soldier killed in Afghan war

Quote:
A powerful roadside bomb explosion has killed at least one US-led soldier in Afghanistan as foreign forces experience their deadliest days in the war-ravaged country.

The western military alliance said in a statement that the soldier was killed in a bomb attack in eastern Afghanistan, a Press TV correspondent reported.

NATO did not reveal the nationality of the soldier or the exact location of the incident.

The developments also come at a time when the US-led war in Afghanistan seems to be at a crucial stage with militants believed to be gaining ground.

Over 328 foreign soldiers -- most of them American -- have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

According to official figures, more than 2,609 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

2 NATO tankers destroyed in Pakistan

Quote:
Two NATO oil tankers supplying fuel to US-led forces in Afghanistan have been destroyed by a roadside bomb in northwestern Pakistan.

The attack took place in the Landi Kotal area of the Khyber Agency on the border with Afghanistan, local sources said on Friday, a Press TV correspondent reported.

There were no casualties in the incident, according to the local sources.

Taliban-linked militants have carried out a number of attacks on NATO fuel trucks in recent months, but no group has claimed responsibility for Friday's attack.

The Taliban-linked militants say that the assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US drone strikes on Pakistan's tribal areas.

Washington claims the drone strikes target militants, but casualty figures show that the attacks have led to the death of hundreds of civilians.

Despite the frequent attacks on NATO supply convoys, the US military has not stopped its unauthorized drone attacks on Pakistan's tribal areas.

Two US-led troops die in Afghan war

Quote:

Two US-led NATO soldiers have been killed in eastern Afghanistan as foreign forces experience some of their deadliest days in the war-ravaged country.

The Western military alliance confirmed the deaths on Saturday without giving further details.

Afghan sources say the two troopers were killed in the eastern province of Kunar.

On Friday, two other US-led foreign soldiers lost their lives in a roadside bomb blast in the east.

The deaths bring the number of foreign fatalities to over 330 so far this year.

According to official figures, more than 2,611 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

NATO has admitted that the power of militants in Afghanistan is on the rise despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led forces in the war-hit country.

The rising number of foreign casualties has stoked opposition to the Afghan war in NATO member states as well as in other countries that have contributed troops to the mission.

Afghan helicopter crash kills 31 US troops

Quote:
A US helicopter crash in eastern Afghanistan has killed 31 US special forces and seven Afghan soldiers, President Hamid Karzai's office says.

The helicopter was taking the personnel back to their base after an operation.

It is not clear how the crash happened but the Taliban said they shot the helicopter down.

The incident is believed to be the biggest single loss of life for US forces in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001.

The helicopter went down overnight in Wardak province, the statement from President Karzai's office said.

It was returning from an operation against the Taliban in which eight insurgents are believed to have been killed.

'Enemy activity'

"The president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan expresses his sympathy and deep condolences to US President Barack Obama and the family of the victims," the statement said.

The Nato-led International Security Assistance Force has confirmed the helicopter crash but has not released details of casualties or the cause.

Nato said it was mounting an operation to recover the helicopter and find out why it crashed. It said there had been "enemy activity in the area" of the crash.

A Taliban spokesman said insurgents brought down the helicopter with a rocket after US and Afghan troops attacked a house in the Sayd Abad district of Wardak where insurgents were meeting late on Friday, Associated Press news agency said.

Sayd Abad, near the province of Kabul, is known to have a strong Taliban presence.

A Wardak government spokesman quoted by AFP news agency agreed with this, saying the helicopter was hit as it was taking off.

It is believed the helicopter was a Chinook, commonly used by coalition forces in Afghanistan to ferry troops in and out of combat.

Four US-led troops killed in Afghan war

Quote:
Separate violent attacks have killed at least four US-led soldiers and wounded several others in various parts of Afghanistan.

NATO said on Sunday that four of its members were killed in two separate militant attacks in south and east Afghanistan.

The nationality of the soldiers or the exact locations of the incidents were not released.

The deaths come just after US-led foreign forces witnessed their deadliest day since the war began a decade ago.

Thirty-one US Special Forces, most of them from the elite Navy SEALs unit were killed after their helicopter crashed in the east.

The Taliban say they brought down the copter with a rocket-propelled grenade. NATO is investigating the incident.

The latest casualties bring to at least 383 the number of US-led troops killed in Afghanistan this year alone.

According to official figures, more than 2,664 US-led soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001.

NATO has admitted that the power of militants in Afghanistan is on the rise despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led forces in the war-hit country.

Bomb destroys NATO fuel tankers in Pakistan

Sixteen tankers carrying oil for NATO troops in Afghanistan destroyed, in latest attack aimed at disrupting supply line.

Quote:
A bomb in Pakistan's northwest has destroyed at least 16 tankers carrying fuel for NATO troops in neighbouring Afghanistan, police said, the latest in a string of attempts to disrupt supplies.

A total of 28 NATO oil tankers were parked at a terminal on the outskirts of Peshawar at the time of the explosion on Saturday, which triggered a fire amongst several of the vehicles.

"We are trying to move away other oil tankers. We are not clear whether the bomb was planted in the terminal or with a tanker," police official Khurshid Khan told the AFP news agency from the site.

"Sixteen tankers were completely destroyed," he said, adding that no casualties had been reported.

Mohammad Ijaz Khan, another senior police officer in Peshawar, said fire fighters were frantically trying to control the blaze.

He said three explosions were heard before the fire swept through the parked tankers.

No group has claimed responsibility, but the Taliban have in the past said that they carried out such attacks to disrupt supplies for more than 130,000 US-led international troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked fighters frequently launch attacks across northwestern Pakistan and the lawless tribal belt on the Afghan border, which Washington has branded the most dangerous place in the world.

Most supplies and equipment required by soldiers in Afghanistan are shipped through Pakistan, although US troops increasingly use alternative routes through Central Asia.

In a statement, the coalition said the five died on Thursday, but disclosed no further details about the deaths.

The deaths raise the number of foreign service members killed so far this month in Afghanistan to 51.

So far this year, at least 374 international troops have died in the war.

Two US-led troops killed in Afghan war

Quote:

At least two US-led foreign soldiers have been killed in separate attacks in Afghanistan as foreign forces continue to experience some of their deadliest days in the war-torn country

French military officials said one French soldier was shot dead in Afghanistan's eastern Kapisa Province.

Meanwhile, Britain's ministry of Defense said a bomb attack killed one British soldier in southern Helmand Province in Afghanistan.

According to the website, icasualties.com, nearly 400 foreign soldiers, mostly Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year.

In separate attacks, multiple bomb blasts and a gun-battle left at least 22 people dead in central Afghanistan.

The attacks targeted the governor's compound in Parwan Province.

Officials say most of the dead are civilians. Over 30 other people were injured.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack in Parwan.

Violence across Afghanistan is at its highest level since the US-led war began in the war-torn country in 2001.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces.

Afghan civilians are bearing the brunt of the escalation in their country.

The US-led war in Afghanistan, with civilian and military casualties at record highs, has become the longest war in the US history.

I can't confirm this because I haven't seen it elsewhere:

'Huge Afghan blast kills 27 US soldiers'

Quote:
A powerful explosion has rocked a US military base in eastern Afghanistan and reportedly killed at least 27 American soldiers and left dozens wounded.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, saying the huge explosion left at least 27 American troops killed and 34 others wounded, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The incident occurred early Thursday when a truck bomb went off inside the US military base in Gardez city, the capital of Afghanistan's Paktia province.

According to the Taliban spokesman, the truck contained hundreds of kilos of explosives.

Witnesses say the explosion was very powerful and a US helicopter was also destroyed in the blast.

American forces in Afghanistan have been experiencing their deadliest days since the beginning of August.

On August 6, at least 31 US Special Forces were killed after Taliban militants shot down an American helicopter belonging to NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan's eastern province of Wardak.

The death toll was the biggest in a single incident for foreign forces since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan began in 2001.

In another attack on August 11, ISAF said in a statement that six US-led soldiers lost their lives following the explosion of a roadside bomb in volatile southern Afghanistan.

The security situation remains fragile in Afghanistan despite the presence of about 150,000 US-led foreign forces in the war-torn country.

The increasing number of troop casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

3 US-led troops killed in Afghan war

Quote:
Three servicemen with NATO forces have been killed in separate roadside bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan.

A NATO soldier was killed in a blast on Thursday, while two others lost their lives in another explosion, the Associated Press cited a brief statement released by the Western military force.

The alliance, however, did not announce the name or nationality of the victims.

Roadside bombs and improvised explosive devices are by far the most lethal weapon Taliban militants use against foreign troops, Afghan forces as well as civilians.

According to official figures released by the website iCasualties.org, a total of 411 foreign troops have lost their lives in war-battered Afghanistan so far this year.

Last year, nonetheless, remains the deadliest year for foreign military casualties with a death toll of 711. The number eclipsed the previous record of 521, set in 2009.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread anger in the US and other NATO member states, undermining public support for the Afghan war.

Two NATO soldiers killed in Afghanistan

Quote:
Attacks in the south of Afghanistan have reportedly killed two members of the United States-led military alliance, NATO.

The forces said the deaths took place on Sunday one in an insurgent attack and the other in a bomb explosion, AP reported.

The alliance did not disclose further information and is awaiting confirmation on the part of the families of the soldiers.

The deaths increased to at least 78 the number of foreign troops killed in the war-hit country so far this month.

The past few months have witnessed a surge in violence in Afghanistan, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Afghans and US-led foreign troops.

The rising number of foreign casualties has stoked opposition the Afghan war, which has been raging on since 2001, among NATO member states.

Two NATO tankers torched in Pakistan

Quote:
At least two NATO oil tankers have been destroyed by unknown militants in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan, officials say.

Militants riding on a motorcycle initially opened fired at the tankers and then set them on fire on the National Highway of Bolan area late Saturday, a Press TV correspondent reported Sunday.

The tankers were completely destroyed, but no casualties were reported, according to officials.

The oil tankers, which were carrying fuel for US-led foreign forces in Afghanistan, were on their way from the southern Pakistani city of Karachi to Afghanistan's Kandahar.

Hundreds of NATO tankers and containers have been destroyed in different parts of Pakistan during the past three years.

In response, Pakistani authorities have deployed large contingents of police and military forces on all major arteries in the area in an attempt to curb the attacks.

Pro-Taliban militants often claim responsibility for such attacks, saying that the assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US drone strikes on Pakistan's tribal regions.

Despite frequent attacks on NATO supply convoys, the US military has not stopped its unauthorized drone bombings on Pakistani territory.

Truck bomb injures scores at U.S. base in Afghanistan

By Hashim Shukoor | McClatchy Newspapers

Quote:
KABUL, Afghanistan — A suicide bomber detonated a truck loaded with explosives at a U.S. military outpost in Wardak province on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, wounding 77 NATO soldiers and about two dozen Afghan civilians, NATO announced Sunday. Two Afghans were killed.

Forty Americans were among the wounded, according to officials in Washington, where word of the Saturday afternoon attack broke as the United States was preparing for a day of solemn ceremonies commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

NATO downplayed the impact of the explosion at Combat Outpost Sayed Abad, emphasizing in its announcement that none of the wounded had suffered life-threatening injuries and that most of the injured were expected to return to duty "shortly." NATO said the force of the blast had been absorbed by protective barriers and that damage was limited to the perimeter wall and a "maintenance facility."

But the statement offered no details on how large the explosion had been, and accounts from Afghan officials suggested that a catastrophe had been narrowly averted.

Alam Gul, a local council chief who lives about six miles from the site of the explosion, said he was at home when he heard the blast.

"The houses which were located near the base have been badly damaged," he said.

Gul said the truck's explosive cargo had been hidden beneath a load of firewood. Shahidullah Shahid, a spokesman for the Wardak governor, said officials did not know how much explosive the truck was carrying.

NATO said the attack took place at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Taliban took responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on their website, claiming they had killed 50 U.S. soldiers — an exaggeration typical of Taliban announcements.

Wardak province, west of Kabul, the nation's capital, has witnessed growing Taliban activity in the last two years. The Sayed Abad district was where 30 U.S. special forces and eight Afghan soldiers were killed last month when their Chinook helicopter was shot down by Taliban militants.

The attack was a reminder that 10 years after invading U.S. troops helped oust the hardline Taliban regime, security remains precarious in most of Afghanistan.

Pro-Taliban militants in the violent Northwestern Pakistan have destroyed NATO oil tankers carrying fuel for US-led foreign troops in neighboring Afghanistan, Press TV reports.

The militants attacked the NATO tankers in Landi Kotal Tehsil of Khyber Agency on Thursday morning, leaving two people dead and some others wounded.

The assailants managed to flee from the scene. No person or group has yet claimed responsibly for the attack which left no casualties.

Pro-Taliban militants often claim responsibility for such attacks, saying that the assaults are in retaliation for non-UN-sanctioned US airstrikes on Pakistan's tribal regions.

Militants have routinely attacked NATO containers in northwest and southwest Pakistan for the past three years.

The attacks have prompted US officials to seek alternative routes for the supplies bound for the foreign troops in Afghanistan.

Violence has been increasing in Pakistan's northwest tribal belt following the 2001 US-led invasion of neighboring Afghanistan.

A series of bombings as well as other attacks have claimed thousands of lives across Pakistan over the past four years.

Kabul suicide bomber kills 13 US soldiers
Attack on military convoy near Darulaman Palace in Afghanistan kills 17 people, including civilians and police officer

Jon Boone in Kabul
guardian.co.uk, Saturday 29 October 2011 16.15 BST

US forces in Afghanistan have suffered their deadliest insurgent attack in months after a car bomb filled with explosives rammed into the side of an armoured bus shuttling troops between Nato bases in Kabul.

The International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said 13 of their troops were killed, and one seriously wounded without specifying nationalities.

But Afghan and western officials privately confirmed that all of the dead soldiers were from the US.

That makes the bombing the heaviest loss of US life since a Chinook helicopter was shot down by the Taliban in August, killing 30 Americans and eight Afghans.

Four Afghan civilians were also killed in Saturday's attack, which the Taliban claimed responsibility for in a text message.

The Taliban said they had filled up the vehicle with around 700kg of explosives which struck at around midday on a thoroughfare overlooked by the iconic hulks of old royal palaces wrecked by Afghanistan's civil war in the 1990s.

One eyewitness said a red Toyota Corolla had been seen driving at high speed, in an apparent attempt to catch up with the heavily fortified bus.

The explosion was sufficient to rip the heavily armoured Rhino bus apart and throw it several metres, over the central reservation of the major road.

Many of the windows in a building half a kilometre away, that is used by Afghan MPs, were smashed.

"It was a huge blast," said Mohammad Wali, a student who had crossed the road just ahead of the Isaf convoy. "It threw the bus about 10m from the blast and sent shrapnel all across the area."

The vehicle had just begun a long journey across the city from Camp Julien, the home of a counterinsurgency school that teaches Afghan troops how to fight guerrilla warfare, to Camp Phoenix, a base that houses US trainers who work with the Afghan army and police.

Kabul's deputy police chief said eight civilians were wounded in addition to the four killed, while one of his own policemen was also killed.

A policeman at the scene, who did not wish to give his name, said he saw three dead school-age children with severely burned bodies.

In a separate incident, three Australian troops lost their lives in the southern province of Uruzgan when an Afghan soldier opened fire on them. Two died immediately, while a third died later of his wounds.
