9/11 Nativity Set Displayed on Staten Island
The nativity set was given to the FDNY by the Chamber of Commerce in Naples, Italy.Saturday, Dec 24, 2011 |The Solidarity Creche will be on display at the Italian Cultural Foundation on Staten Island through Jan. 6.
advertisement A special nativity scene dedicated to the 343 firefighters who died on September 11, 2001 has found a permanent home on Staten Island.
The 120-piece Nativity set, called the Solidarity Creche, was given to the Fire Department by the Chamber of Commerce in Naples, Italy just three months after the terrorist attacks.
The foot-tall figurines Three Kings included in the creche feature different presents offered to the baby Jesus -- instead of frankincense, gold, and myrrh, they are holding FDNY helmets.
One of the helmets is painted with 9/11/01 to remember those lost in the terrorist attacks.
Daniel Nigro, a retired chief of the FDNY, worked to get the Solidarity Creche to find a permanent home at the Italian Cultural Foundation on Staten Island. It hasn't been displayed anywhere since Christmas 2006, but will not be on display through Jan. 6 -- Three King's Day -- at the foundation's Grymes Hill building, called Casa Belvedere.
"It's a tribute and a memory to the firemen and all others who lost their lives during 9/11, and it's a way to keep their memory alive and honor their memory," said Gina Biancardi, from the Italian Cultural Foundation.
