Quote:
Welcome to The Political Compass™

There's abundant evidence for the need of it. The old one-dimensional categories of 'right' and 'left', established for the seating arrangement of the French National Assembly of 1789, are overly simplistic for today's complex political landscape. For example, who are the 'conservatives' in today's Russia? Are they the unreconstructed Stalinists, or the reformers who have adopted the right-wing views of conservatives like Margaret Thatcher ?

On the standard left-right scale, how do you distinguish leftists like Stalin and Gandhi? It's not sufficient to say that Stalin was simply more left than Gandhi. There are fundamental political differences between them that the old categories on their own can't explain. Similarly, we generally describe social reactionaries as 'right-wingers', yet that leaves left-wing reactionaries like Robert Mugabe and Pol Pot off the hook.

That's about as much as we should tell you for now. After you've responded to the following propositions during the next 3-5 minutes, all will be explained. In each instance, you're asked to choose the response that best describes your feeling: Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree or Strongly Agree. At the end of the test, you'll be given the compass, with your own special position on it.

The test presented on this website is entirely anonymous. None of your personal details are required, and nothing about your result is recorded or logged in any way. The answers are only used to calculate your reading, and cannot be accessed by anyone, ever.

Oooh. -8.25 economic. That's pretty hardcore. I'm impressed. Very Happy

More context, based on the 2008 U.S. Presidential Elections:

I would have been disappointed, SocialistScott, if your result was different. Wink

Actually, I can't believe anyone would answer in such a manner as to put him/herself in the upper right quadrant. It would seem impossible, with that set of questions. Must be a huge score difference between the "strongly agree" and "agree" selections.

What's with the Obama score!!! Shocked Those guys don't score themselves, so who does it for them, and what do they use for data? Oh never mind, the website answers this and a bunch of other interesting questions!

(I'll never finish editing this post, I see. Sorry, I removed the bit about the Meyers-Briggs test in which I came out, like Donald Rumsfeld, Shocked an INTJ. I think there's an online version of that, too.)

Also, someone could make a "cloud of friends" based on this test, if they were inclined to use facebook, which I am probably never, ever, EVER going to use. (http://apps.facebook.com/thepoliticalcompass/friendscloud.php)

The movements and collectives that I am involved with contend that the MAJORITY of people are social-Anarchists in nature.

We work towards our own best interests.

I am an ENFJ! Razz

Unless you have convinced yourself otherwise, Anarchists can only be social.

Don't know why, but I couldn't get my graph to post.

If you go to the lower left corner, and count four spots in the diaganal upward direction.... that is my 'hood."

I didn't mean to give the impression that the site allows one to create a postable graph. The one that I posted is a screen capture.

My husband: -6.5 on both scores. (We do have a very politically harmonious household, including our children and inlaws - and neighbors!) He thinks the answers should be so obvious that he wondered if it was a "push poll". I'd like to ask our pumpkin friend how he came out so different from the rest of us? This is not meant to cast aspersions, I'm just curious because apparently nobody in my immediate circle of friends and family would leave the lower left quadrant without being tortured!

It is still in the green just getting close to the red. I am more left than our current president and vp. A lot more.

Figured I'd start out here by getting an official determination of my place on the socio-political landscape. Looks like I'm pretty solidly in that sunny SW corner of the SW corner. Nice to be among friends.
