The split-screen coverage of the House Impeachment hearing and the Trump Two+ hour tirade in Michigan was an image for future history books. The third impeachment in US history and the first for a first term POTUS on one side, and a hot sweaty mess waving his tiny hands and attacking dead Congressmen on the other. I often wonder if these future cultural anthropologists will tease apart this tangled web and uncover the real reason every single Republican in Congress have collectively thrown themselves into the Trump volcano. Like lemmings that can’t resist the edge even when they know they’ll end up smashed on the rocky beach below.
You could almost believe someone slipped a psychedelic mind control drug into their water supply. They claim sincerity in their fierce defense of Individual-1, despite the mountain of evidence from multiple respected sources proving his guilt of Abuse of Power. They look and act like zombie cult members. Look how Lindsay Graham has twisted 180 degrees from a severe Trump critic (“dangerous/crazy/kook”) to the toady bullshit shoveler we see before us today. If there was ever a doubt about their united slavish devotion to this bloated Unitarian con man, consider Rep. Loudermilk from Georgia on the floor yesterday:
Before you take this historic vote today, one week before Christmas, I want you to keep this in mind: When Jesus was falsely accused of treason, Pontius Pilate gave Jesus the opportunity to face his accusers. During that sham trial, Pontius Pilate afforded more rights to Jesus than the Democrats have afforded this president in this process.
What? The “Two Corinthians” guy who tried to bang every woman he met, psychotically convinced they were all hot for him, and set up a fake university to rip off poor people? Multiple wives, bankruptcies, criminal offspring, fake businesses, shifty business partners, convicted campaign leadership and/or Cabinet members, child-caging, wall-building, racist bigot is just like JESUS?!?!?!?!? If I was a Christian I would be extremely disturbed by this blasphemous conflation. In fact, it appears at least some Christians have found an antidote to the Trump Kool-Aid, for the first time since 2016. Franklin Graham must be about to climb out of his crawlspace over this editorial from his blessed daddy’s legacy publication, Christianity Today:
But the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.
So, not so much like Jesus. And witness the recent exodus from Cult Trump of Pat Robertson. Robertson has furrowed his brows and tossed his head over the treatment of immigrants at the border, primarily because once they’re across they usually become devout supporters of televangelists, paying while praying for miracles. Pat is uncomfortable with the caged children and the firing of teargas at pregnant women and infants, but he became white-hot “absolutely appalled” was the way he abandoned our allies, the Kurds, to slaughter in Syria, and endangered our American soldiers.
“I am absolutely appalled that the United States is going to betray those democratic forces in northern Syria, that we’re possibly going to allow the Turkish to come in against the Kurds,” said Robertson, who once called Trump “God’s man for this job.”
Robertson warned Trump that he could lose the mandate of the people if the Kurds were attacked after our troop withdrawal, calling Turkish President Erdo?an a “dictator” and a “thug.”
“To say he’s an ally of America is nonsense,” Robertson added. “He is in for himself, and the president, who allowed (Jamal) Khashoggi to be cut in pieces without any repercussions whatsoever is now allowing the Christians and the Kurds to be massacred by the Turks.”He concluded: “This is what happens, ladies and gentlemen, when the president of the United States is spending his time worried about attacks from the other party and talk of impeachment…and now our government is saying you have a free hand to go into Syria and take out the democratic forces to take out the Kurds.”
I’m so old I remember when Republicans disliked dictators and supported democracies. So much has changed so quickly I can’t keep up with the speed-addicted hamster that spins the wheels under Trump’s hairflap. But perhaps some of the notable Christian public figures are also comparing Trump to Jesus, but dissent from Rep. Loudermilk’s assessment.
Now Trump has succeeded in yet another miracle- creating chaos even inside the Christian community. A usually rock-solid block of constituents who back the GOP no matter what.
If you’re a true believer, you could reasonable wonder if he was, in fact, the Antichrist they have fantasizes about for centuries.
